I. What is a Dental Technician?
A Dental Technician is an integral part of the dental team responsible for the production of all removable and fixed appliances, such as complete and partial dentures, orthodontic appliances, crowns, bridges and maxillo-facial prostheses.
II. General Diploma in Dental Technology
The Hospital is the only teaching institute in Hong Kong offering a two-year full-time dental technician training course leading to the award of General Diploma in Dental Technology.
III. Course Aims
The course provides full training for students with substantial knowledge and practical dexterity of Dental Technology. The ample practical training opportunities offered by the course enable the graduates to produce dental appliances, e.g. partial and complete dentures, orthodontic appliances and bridges.
IV. Course Objectives
At the end of the course, students should be able to
- design and fabricate dental appliances in metals or acrylic resin in Prosthodontic Technology;
- design and construct crowns and bridges with acrylic resin, metal, porcelain and bonded ceramic in Conservation Technology;
- design and construct functional appliances with spring and/or screw in Orthodontic Technology;
- understand the development of advance dental technology;
- organize and establish the services of a dental laboratory;
- understand professional ethics and current dental legislation.

VI. Mode of Teaching
Apart from classroom lectures, small groups teaching, demonstration and practical training will also be given to facilitate the study. Both theory and practice count.

VIII. Attendance
About 36 hours per week (including lectures and practical sessions). Normal class hours are:
Monday - Friday
8:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
1:30 p.m. - 5:30 p.m.
All lectures, practical sessions and other class activities are mandatory.

5 subjects attaining Grade E / Level 2 or above in HKCEE, including English Language* OR equivalent. |
* For English Language (Syllabus A) in pre-2007 HKCEE, only Grade C or above will be considered. |
X. Commencement Date
6 September 2010 (tentative)
XI. Tuition Fee
HK$ 31,575 per annum by two equal instalments
(May be revised according to Government’s announcement and is non-refundable unless the course is cancelled)
XII. Financial Assistance
Students may apply for the Government's "Tertiary Student Finance Scheme - Publicly-funded Programmes" or the "Non-means Tested Loan Scheme" for grants/loans.
