Notice to Teaching Patients

Purpose

The Prince Philip Dental Hospital is a world class teaching hospital designed specifically to provide training facilities for dental undergraduates, postgraduates and ancillary dental trainees.

Patients

You, as a member of the public, are invited to be examined and treated here, at nominal cost, so as to provide an integral part of our teaching programme. However, we must stress that we have no public service commitments . After the first examination, treatment cannot be guaranteed. If we accept you as our patient for treatment, our service to you is in fact wholly geared to our teaching needs.

Initial Examination Process

On your first attendance, you will be examined by dentists of Reception and Primary Care Clinic. If you are under 14, the initial screening will be performed in Paediatric Dentistry Clinic. The dentists will inform you if your dental problems are suitable for our teaching purposes or for further assessment by various clinics. If so, in due course, you will be given scheduled appointments for treatment or further assessment. If not, treatment will not be guaranteed but you will be advised of your dental problems and to seek further attention elsewhere.

Waiting Time and Treatment Arrangements

If you are accepted as our teaching patient, your waiting time before the commencement of our treatment rendered to you depends on our teaching requirements. It varies according to the type of problem from several weeks to several years. Furthermore, you should be aware that a full course of treatment is likely to be time-consuming and usually requires more visits than if you were to seek treatment from a private dental practitioner.

You are advised to be punctual for any scheduled dental appointments. If you are late, the teaching clinician may have other commitments and may not be able to treat you. Also, if you fail to attend for a scheduled appointment without prior notice, you may run the risk of being discharged if the progress of your treatment can no longer be fitted into our teaching programme.

Standard of Treatment

Highly qualified clinical staff who are members of Faculty of Dentistry, the University of Hong Kong will supervise any work carried out by students who are under training.

Charges

Every new/re-registered teaching patient has to pay $45 for the attendance fee on a "per day" basis. Please note that additional charges will be raised for the supply of dental appliances . For details, please refer to the Schedule of Fees. No further treatment will be provided if you fail to pay before the specified date .

Issue of Queue Cards

A limited number of queue cards are issued for morning and afternoon sessions from 08:15 hrs to 15:30 hrs at the Information Counter on the First Floor. Patients who arrive early will be seated in the waiting area from 06:30 hrs onwards. No queue cards will be issued once the quota is full.

Telephone Booking (for children under 14 only)

Bookings may be made one week in advance by telephoning 2859-0238 starting at 08:30 hrs on working days. No bookings will be made if the booking list is full. Parents will be required to give their children's personal information including their name, date of birth and telephone number. Normally, children will then be requested to arrive at the Information Counter at 08:30 hrs (for morning sessions) and 13:45 hrs (for afternoon sessions) on the scheduled day. However, Telephone Booking may be suspended during August and December.
