I. Introduction

According to a survey in China, eight billion people on the Mainland are suffering from some degree of periodontal disease. Although the situation in Hong Kong is not as bad, there are still a large number of people with gum disease. Simply educating the public about the proper way to clean teeth is not sufficient to eradicate the problem; professional help from a well trained dental hygienist may be required in many cases. In response to the demands of the community, the Hospital together with HKU SPACE Community College is offering a 2-year Higher Diploma programme in Dental Hygiene commencing 2002 with the support of the Faculty of Dentistry of The University of Hong Kong (HKU). The Hospital is the only teaching institute in Hong Kong providing such training.

II. Course Aims

This Higher Diploma Programme aims to provide the relevant professional training and knowledge needed to prepare the Student Dental Hygienists for a career in dental hygiene.
