  1. What is a Dental Surgery Assistant?

    A Dental Surgery Assistant is a very important member of the dental team, who assists the dentist at the chairside with the care of patients before, during and after treatment. His/Her attitude can make a tremendous difference to how a patient accepts the treatment and how he/she helps the dentist achieve the set goals.

    甚麼是『牙科手術助理員』?

    『牙科手術助理員』是整個牙科醫療隊伍中一個重要成員。不論在治療前後或手術過程中，牙科手術助理員均須協助牙醫照顧病人。他/她的態度影響著治療及手術成效。

  2. Certificate of Proficiency in Dental Surgery Assisting

    The Hospital is the only teaching institute in Hong Kong which provides both basic theory training and clinical practice for student dental surgery assistants. It offers one-year full-time and two-year part-time day release training courses leading to the award of Certificate of Proficiency in Dental Surgery Assisting.

    本院是香港唯一一所能同時提供理論及臨床實習訓練予牙科手術助理學員的教學機構。本課程分別設有一年全日制及兩年日間兼讀制。受訓期滿及格者，可獲頒發牙科手術助理員證書。

  3. Course Aims
    課程宗旨
    1. To train students with safe, competent and marketable skills in providing effective assistance to members of the dental team, through high quality levels of training and instruction;
      通過優質訓練和指導，使學員掌握牙科手術助理員所需之各種專業技能，從而為牙醫及醫療隊伍提供有效的協助;
    2. To encourage students to be aware of their responsibilities including those to the patients in their care, through knowledge of legal and ethical considerations;
      鼓勵學員透過學習，認識和了解法理與專業操守，從而學懂應有的責任，包括自身責任及對受其照顧之病人應有的責任;
    3. To encourage participation in local and international dental organizations as a means for entrance to their professionalism and to become life long learners.
      鼓勵學員參加本地及國際性牙科組織，提高專業水平，成為一位不斷學習和持續進修的終身學員。
  4. Course Objectives

    At the end of the course, the student should be able to:

    1. understand the role of a Dental Surgery Assistant in the dental industry;
      明瞭牙科手術助理員在牙科行業中的角色；
    2. assist the dentist at the chairside with the care of patients before, during and after treatment;
      協助牙醫在治療前後和手術過程中照顧病人；
    3. perform high quality infection control procedures in the clinical areas, including appropriate cleansing, disinfection and sterilization techniques;
      在診室執行高質的預防感染程序，包括適當的清洗、消毒和滅菌技術；
    4. teach oral hygiene knowledge, including periodontal disease, dietary advice and oral cleaning techniques;
      教授口腔衞生常識，如牙周病的知識、飲食建議和口腔清潔技巧等；
    5. perform basic procedures for dental appliance making, e.g. pouring study casts and constructing special trays;
      執行基本牙具製作程序，例如倒鑄牙模及製造印模托盤；
    6. develop and mount radiographs; and
      沖晒及裱裝X光片；及
    7. manage a dental clinic efficiently.

  6. Course Structure

    FIRST SEMESTER

    課程結構

      7. Preventive Dentistry

    2. Practical Chairside Assisting in the following disciplines:-
      於下列診症科接受實習訓練：
      1. Reception and Primary Care
        初診及收症處
      2. Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, including visit to Queen Mary Hospital's operating theatre
        口腔頷面外科，包括參觀瑪麗醫院手術室
      3. Oral Radiology
        口腔X光學
      4. Paediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics, including visit to The Duchess of Kent Children's Hospital
        兒童齒科及矯齒學，包括參觀大口環根德公爵夫人兒童醫院
      5. Endodontics
        牙髓病學
      6. Periodontology and Dental Public Health
        牙周病學及牙齒公共衞生
      7. Oral Rehabilitation
        口腔復康科

    SECOND SEMESTER

    2. Practical Chairside Assisting
      Students will return to each discipline to learn more advanced procedures
      實習訓練
      學員會再被派往各診症科，以便更深入掌握各種進階程序
    3. Dental Health Education Project
      牙科健康教育計劃
    4. Visits to private dental clinics, Government Oral Health Education Unit and specials schools for mentally or physically handicapped children / adults
      參觀私家牙科診所及政府口腔健康教育中心，並探訪特殊學校，與殘障或智障兒童/成年人接觸
  7. Mode of Teaching

    Running concurrently with lectures, students will learn all disciplines' procedures through classroom instruction, audio-visual media, small group teaching, clinical observation, demonstration and practice. All lectures, teaching, training and examinations will be conducted in English.

    授課之餘，學員亦會同時透過課堂指導、視像媒介、小組教授、診室觀察、現場示範及實習等方式學習。所有講課、教授、訓練及考試皆以英語進行。

  9. Attendance

    Full-time (1 year):

    Part-time (2 years)*:    Monday – Friday  

    Monday – Friday      8:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.

    8:30 a.m. – 12:45 p.m.    * Including full-time teaching for several weeks

    All lectures, practical sessions and other class activities are mandatory.

  10. Admission Requirements
    入學資格
    1. Good general health (Hepatitis B, Rubella and Measles vaccinations required);
      健康狀況良好(須作乙型肝炎、德國麻疹及麻疹的防疫注射)；
    2. Competent in both Cantonese and English (written and spoken); and
      書寫及操流利粵語及英語; 及
    3. Five (5) subjects attaining Grade E / Level 2 or above in HKCEE (including English Language*), or equivalent
      * For English Language (Syllabus A) in pre-2007 HKCEE, only Grade C or above will be considered.

      Full Project Yi Jin certificate

      or
      Minimum one (1) year's full-time working experience as a Dental Surgery Assistant

      香港中學會考五科達E級/第二級或以上 (包括英國語文*)， 或 同等學歷
      * 若申請人應考2007年前的香港中學會考英國語文 (課程甲)，成績則須達C 級或以上。

      或
      毅進計劃全科及格畢業證書

      或
      最少一年全職牙科手術助理員工作經驗

    Note:Preference will be given to applicants with First Aid or CardioPulmonary Resuscitation training.

    註:曾接受急救訓練及心肺復甦訓練者可獲優先取錄。

  12. Tuition Fee
    Full-time:
    Part-time:    		HK$28,000 per annum
    HK$14,000 per annum    		}by two equal instalments

  13. Financial Assistance

    Students may apply for the Government's "Non-means Tested Loan Scheme" for loans.
